S.M.A.S.H Renames O’Reilly Series to Contender Series as Official Path to Cup

By S.M.A.S.H — June 18, 2026

S.M.A.S.H is taking another step toward building a stronger, clearer ladder system for Season 2.

Effective immediately, the O’Reilly Series will now be known as the Contender Series.

This change is more than a name update.

It represents a shift in purpose.

The Contender Series will now serve as the official path toward the S.M.A.S.H Cup Series, giving drivers a clear place to prove they are ready before moving into the league’s top-level live-streamed division.

As S.M.A.S.H continues to grow, the goal is simple.

Build better racing.

Create a more organized advancement system.

Protect the quality of the Cup Series.

And give drivers a fair opportunity to earn their way in.

Why the O’Reilly Series Is Becoming the Contender Series

The former O’Reilly Series has always given drivers another place to compete inside S.M.A.S.H.

Now, that series will have a more defined purpose.

Moving forward, the Contender Series will be the proving ground for drivers who want to be considered for the S.M.A.S.H Cup Series.

The car itself is not changing. The Contender Series will continue using the O’Reilly car in iRacing.

What is changing is the role of the series inside the league.

Instead of being treated as just another division on the schedule, the Contender Series will now be used as a true evaluation and development path for Cup Series consideration.

That gives drivers a clear direction.

It gives Race Control a better way to evaluate readiness.

And it gives the league a stronger structure heading into Season 2.

Cup Series Path Moving Forward

With the Cup Series moving into live-streamed competition for Season 2, drivers will no longer be able to join the Cup Series directly.

The expectations around that division are being raised.

Live-streamed racing means more visibility for the league, more attention on the drivers, and a stronger need for clean, consistent, respectful competition.

That does not mean drivers are being shut out.

It means drivers will need to show they are ready.

The Contender Series gives them the place to do that.

Drivers who want to work toward the Cup Series will first need to compete in the Contender Series and show that they can meet the standards expected at the next level.

Current Cup Series Drivers

All drivers currently in the S.M.A.S.H Cup Series are locked into the Cup Series for Season 2.

Those drivers have already been part of the Cup Series structure and will carry that status forward into the new season.

This change is not designed to remove current Cup drivers.

It is designed to create a better process for future Cup Series additions.

Current Contender Series Drivers

Drivers who are currently racing in what was formerly the O’Reilly Series, now the Contender Series, but are not currently part of the Cup Series, will need to race their way in through the Contender Series.

This means the path is clear.

Race the Contender Series.

Show consistency.

Show racecraft.

Show respect for Race Control.

Show that you can handle the competition.

Show that you are ready for the Cup Series.

Advancement will be earned through performance, conduct, attendance, and overall league standards.

New Driver Registration

All new driver registrations will follow this same process moving forward.

If a new driver wants to be considered for the S.M.A.S.H Cup Series, that driver will first need to compete in the Contender Series.

This gives new drivers time to learn how S.M.A.S.H operates before stepping into the top-level live-streamed division.

It also gives Race Control and league administration a chance to evaluate each driver in real race conditions.

Speed will matter.

But speed alone will not be the only thing considered.

What Race Control Will Be Watching

The Contender Series will allow S.M.A.S.H to evaluate drivers in several important areas.

Drivers will be reviewed based on:

  • Racecraft

  • Consistency

  • Attendance

  • Respect for Race Control

  • Overall league standards

These areas matter because the Cup Series is not just about who can run one fast lap.

It is about who can race clean over a full event.

It is about who can handle pressure.

It is about who understands the rules.

It is about who can compete around other drivers without creating unnecessary problems.

It is about who represents the league the right way.

Not About Keeping Drivers Out

This change is not about keeping drivers out of the Cup Series.

It is about making the league stronger.

S.M.A.S.H wants drivers to have a clear path forward. The Contender Series gives drivers that path.

Instead of guessing how to move up, drivers will know exactly where they need to compete and what they need to show.

The goal is not to block opportunity.

The goal is to make advancement mean something.

When a driver earns consideration for the Cup Series, it should be because they have proven they are ready for that level of racing.

Series Structure Moving Forward

The structure is simple.

Contender Series: The proving ground for drivers looking to earn consideration for S.M.A.S.H Cup Series competition.

Cup Series: The top-level live-streamed division for drivers who have shown they are ready for that level of racing.

This gives S.M.A.S.H a cleaner ladder system and a better way to protect the quality of the racing product across both divisions.

Building Toward Season 2

Season 2 is an important step for S.M.A.S.H.

The league is growing.

The broadcast product is expanding.

The competition level is increasing.

And the structure around driver advancement needs to grow with it.

The Contender Series helps make that happen.

It gives drivers a meaningful place to compete.

It gives new members a clear starting point.

It gives Race Control a better evaluation tool.

And it gives the Cup Series a stronger foundation.

More details on advancement, eligibility, and driver expectations will be posted as S.M.A.S.H continues preparing for Season 2.

Final Word

The O’Reilly Series is now the Contender Series.

The name has changed because the purpose has changed.

This series will now serve as the official path toward the S.M.A.S.H Cup Series.

Current Cup Series drivers are locked into Cup for Season 2. Current Contender Series drivers who are not already in Cup will need to race their way in. New drivers will follow the same process moving forward.

This is about building the league the right way.

Cleaner structure.

Better competition.

Stronger standards.

A clearer path to Cup.

The Contender Series is where drivers prove they are ready.

The Cup Series is where that work pays off.
