S.M.A.S.H Cup Series: Rob Caryl Wins Talladega Thriller

By S.M.A.S.H — May 9, 2026

Talladega did exactly what Talladega always does: it packed the field together, punished mistakes, rewarded patience, and saved the real fight for the final run.

The S.M.A.S.H Cup Series rolled into Talladega Superspeedway for a 50-lap battle that delivered everything expected from superspeedway racing — cautions, lead changes, drafting strategy, late-race pressure, and a finish decided by who could stay composed when the field started stacking up.

When it was over, #40 Rob Caryl stood on top, taking the win after a smart, calculated drive through one of the most unpredictable tracks on the schedule.

The race featured 20 drivers, 5 cautions for 15 caution laps, and 8 official lead changes, proving once again that Talladega is never about one lap, one move, or one driver. It is about surviving long enough to be in position when the race finally decides who gets a shot.

Rob Caryl Closes the Deal

Caryl started seventh and stayed in the mix all night, never needing to dominate every lap to control the moment that mattered most. He led only 4 laps, but those were the right laps.

At Talladega, that is the difference between being fast and being smart.

Caryl kept himself close enough to capitalize, avoided the worst of the chaos, and finished the job when the pressure was highest. In a race where the draft can make heroes and erase them in the same corner, the #40 team put together the complete package: timing, discipline, and enough aggression to seal the deal.

Patrick Hernandez Comes Up Just Short

#91 Patrick Hernandez brought home a strong second-place finish, crossing the line just behind Caryl after a hard-fought final stretch. Hernandez started 11th and worked his way forward, proving that track position at Talladega is never permanent.

He did not lead a lap, but he stayed alive, stayed attached to the front pack, and was there when the race came down to the final push. That is how you build a serious Cup Series result.

Christopher Melton Grabs a Podium Finish

#49 Christopher Melton finished third after leading 3 laps and keeping himself in contention throughout the night. Melton’s run was one of the strongest overall performances in the field, especially considering how much movement and disruption the race produced.

A podium at Talladega is never handed out. It has to be earned through patience, lane choice, and trust in the cars around you. Melton checked those boxes and walked away with a major result.

Shane Marcum Leads the Most Laps

The most dominant car for much of the race was #47 Shane Marcum, who led a race-high 37 laps. Marcum controlled a major portion of the event and showed clear speed in traffic, but Talladega does not always reward the driver who leads the most laps.

He still brought home a fifth-place finish, which keeps the night from being a loss, but the result also shows how brutal this place can be. You can lead most of the race and still watch the win slip away in the final shuffle.

Final Word

Talladega does not care about plans. It does not care who had the fastest car, who led the most laps, or who looked strongest halfway through. It only cares who survives the draft, handles the pressure, and makes the right move when the field stacks up for the finish.

This time, that driver was #40 Rob Caryl.

The S.M.A.S.H Cup Series continues to prove why this league is built different. Big fields. Real pressure. Clean competition where possible, hard racing when necessary, and a standard that keeps getting sharper every week.

At Talladega, the line between victory and heartbreak was thin.

Rob Caryl found the right side of it.
